I want to give you a little background about me, my journey with my own health began back in 2003. I was living in Boston, MA and after many years of competitive running, I decided to run my first marathon. As I was training I began to have some digestive issues, but despite my body's symptoms (or what I like to call "cries for help"), my "type A" personality took over and I ignored the pain and went on to finish the marathon.
Time went on and my symptoms got worse, so I decided to see a doctor. He diagnosed my condition as a digestive disorder called ulcerative colitis and gave me medication, with no reference to my diet at all. It did not make any sense to me that diet was not apart of my treatment plan, so I began my own quest to improve my health and heal my body. I researched many alternative therapies and decided upon a woman, who was a Holistic Health Coach. She used a body, mind, spirit approach to health and while she was extremely knowledgeable in all of the scientific facts, she was also there with emotional support. We focused on eliminating foods that did not agree with my body and also worked on balancing something called "primary food". Primary food is everything in life that does not come on a dinner plate. For example things such as career, relationships, exercise, spirituality and home environment all play a huge roll in overall health.
Ten years have gone by since working with her, I have been able to fully eliminate the medication for my colitis and my health has continued to improve. One day, about 6 or 7 years ago I was on my Health Coach's website, I saw a link to The Institute for Integrative Nutrition where she received her training. I have always had a passion and a strong interest in nutrition and healthy living, so I decided to see what the training would be like to become a Certified Holistic Health Coach.
I attended The Institute for Integrative Nutrition and finished my certification in July 2009. It was one of the best experiences of my life! Not only did I learn a tremendous amount of information about the body and nutrition, but I also learned that true health has nothing to do with counting calories and following strict diets. I now know that being healthy means getting back to basics and trusting that my body will find balance as long as I take the time to listen to it and treat it with respect by giving it the food, exercise and rest that is right for my body type and where I am in my life.
